Business Women's Forum 2019: 05/21 Mastering the Tools to Close the Gender Wage Gap

ONLINE REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED. Please join us at the door.
Presentation:
The gender pay gap has existed since women entered the workforce. Utah ranks 50th in the nation when it comes to gender pay equity—the result of a unique set of cultural norms and business practices and policies. Any step we, as a state or business community, take will help to improve this standing which would have positive effects for Utah’s economy. While the gender wage gap may seem daunting, the good news is you have control over how your company addresses that gap.

Linda Wardell, from City Creek Center, will identify what actions you can take to close the gender wage gap, and what policies to adopt to create a more fair and equitable pay environment. When everyone has the same incentives and opportunities, we all benefit from increased diversity, greater innovation and more financial stability which leads to a stronger economy.

Our Non-Profit Spotlight for this luncheon is The Younique Foundation. They offer a free four-day retreat for adult female survivors of child sex abuse. Often times, they need journals and bowls to provide to the participants during the time that they are there.

We are asking all of our attendees to bring a journal
or bowl to donate to the Younqiue Foundation.
  • Journals
    • When participants first arrive at The Haven Retreat, a welcome package is waiting for them on their beds. They can always use journals to include in these packages to help their participants feel welcome, comfortable, and safe. They also use these journals to do healing writing and take notes during their classes.
    • When selecting a journal, please avoid composition and spiral-bound notebooks. Also, because our participants come from many backgrounds, avoid journals with religious messaging.
    • You may purchase a journal from their wish list.
    Bowls
    • One of the education activities their participants enjoy is Kintsugi, which is the Japanese philosophy of recognizing beauty in broken things. During this activity, participants take a whole bowl and crack it with a hammer. But then survivors take their broken pieces and mend them with beautiful gold epoxy. In the end, their bowls are made more beautiful and more valuable because of the imperfections. We hope that survivors see the beauty in the breakage and recognize that healing enhances their own value and self-worth.
    • Bowls that are 3-5 inches wide; ceramic, porcelain, or stoneware.
    • You may purchase a bowl from their wish list.

About the Presenter:
Linda Wardell, General Manager, City Creek Center
Linda Wardell is the general manager of City Creek Center, the retail portion of City Creek, one of the largest mixed-use downtown redevelopment projects in the nation. With more than 30 years of experience managing and marketing shopping centers, Wardell oversees retail operations for the landmark shopping and dining destination in the heart of Salt Lake City.

A seasoned retail executive, Wardell received her first taste of shopping centers at an Atlanta-based boutique advertising agency. Her clients included Taubman, owner and operator of City Creek Center.

Wardell has played a pivotal role in the grand openings of several high-profile properties, including Polaris Fashion Place, a 1.5-million-square-foot shopping center in Columbus, Ohio. Linda spent nine years with Glimcher Realty Trust, owner of Polaris, and while there opened two shopping centers and earned frequent career promotions, eventually serving as vice president of marketing.

Wardell joined Taubman in January 2007 and now brings her extensive experience to City Creek Center.  Wardell and her team oversee the Salt Lake City property which receives over 23 million visitors annually.

Non-Profit Spotlight:

One in four girls is sexually abused before the age of 18. At the Younique Foundation, we inspire hope in women who were sexually abused as children or adolescents by providing healing services through retreats, survivor communities, and online resources. We empower parents and caregivers with our Defend Innocence brand to protect children from sexual abuse through education and online resources. We make it safe to openly discuss sexual abuse through community dialogue and social awareness.
